Why a Global Housing Action Day?

Around the world, the struggle for land and housing rights unites us. Whether we live in cities or rural areas, in the global North or South, we face the same forces that push us into precarity and erode our livelihoods – property speculation, extractive economic policies, mass evictions, and governments that put profits before people. As corporations and landlords let empty buildings fall into disrepair, millions are displaced, evicted, living insecurely, or crushed by unaffordable rents and mortgages.

We are residents resisting evictions, workers fighting for fair wages and safe housing, unsheltered people demanding dignified housing for all, and communities reclaiming land and space for collective living. We demand a system that treats our homes and living spaces as basic needs rather than commodities.

From April 21st to 27th, let's take action together! We fight back and show that solidarity knows no bounds! We come together, demonstrate, occupy, blockade, and organize – from squatting to rent strikes, from mass protests to community-led solutions.

A system that puts profits over people is a system we must dismantle. Our struggle is global – and so is our opposition!

We demand:

Homes for people, not for profit: Stop property speculation and the power of property bosses. Guarantee housing as a public good, not as a commodity.

Dismantle the power of corporate landlords: Break up real estate monopolies, give land back to communities and prioritize cooperative and public ownership. No construction projects based on displacement and exploitation!

Climate-proof living now: Governments must invest in disaster-resilient, carbon-neutral housing. Housing rights are climate rights – no one should be displaced or die from preventable disasters. Save land, repurpose empty spaces and build a just future.

Houses, not war: Abolish defense budgets – invest in public housing. Stop genocide, domicide and the destruction of cities.
