Growing list of organizations call for tenancy law
Our call for housing security is now supported by a growing list of organizations: BPW, Doorbraak, De Socialisten Utrecht, Dwars Vidius, Rood Utrecht, Woonopstand, Woonprotest Utrecht and Utrecht BIJ1. Let us know via utrecht@bondprecairewoonvormen.nl if your organization also supports these residents in their fight for housing justice.
Due to the various actions, there has also been a lot of media attention for the bizarre situation of the residents. View the messages from Heart of the Netherlands, DIVE, RTV Utrecht, Podcast City Hall Square Utrecht, DUB, the AD and BreakthroughNow it is time to increase the pressure on the municipality: they must now provide housing security and prevent 180 evictions!
Political pressure to provide a solution is increasing
The issue is also on the agenda of the Utrecht city council. On February 6, we were present together with residents at the meeting where the future of Ravellaan 96 and its residents was discussed. The debate can be here watch back from 00:40:32. Despite many evasive manoeuvres, no real commitments have yet been made to guarantee the housing security of the residents.
There are still no concrete plans for the future of the building. However, the rights of the current residents are in danger of being at the expense of non-existent future developments. They have had 10 years to come up with plans and have failed. The municipality must take responsibility for the possible homelessness of 180 current residents and must start behaving like a decent landlord. Residents must finally receive tenancy rights and a normal contract, not uncertain via the vacancy law or without rights via a loan, but a regular rental contract that people are entitled to! On 14 February, the residents will have a meeting with the alderman for housing to make this clear once again.
Whose city? Our city!
The BPW calls on politicians to take responsibility: "The musical chairs to make tenants interchangeable leads to even more homelessness, this is completely irresponsible and unacceptable!" Our fight for housing security and tenancy rights for everyone continues. We call on everyone to join us and show your solidarity. On February 20, there will be a vote on the future of the Ravellaan, it is time for the municipality of Utrecht to opt for tenancy law!
The residents of the Ravel want certainty:
“If even the municipality is not a good landlord, what can you rely on?”
"I don't want any more uncertainty. It's time for us to get rental rights. Utrecht is our city, politics must now ensure that we can continue to live here."
Save the Ravel and BPW Utrecht demand from the Municipality of Utrecht and Socius:
1. Offer security of residence and a say. Let the 180 residents of the Ravel stay in their home and respect their tenancy rights.
2. Prevent homelessness. Stop exchanging current tenants for other temporary tenants. No youth on the streets!
3. Maintain the current community and residential groups in the building and the social cohesion in the neighbourhood.
4. Stop the dumping of social responsibility by the Municipality of Utrecht and Socius on individual tenants and society. Take responsibility and guarantee housing security for everyone.
