BPW DEMANDS RESIDENCE AND FINANCIAL SECURITY FOR JELENA

Come to the presentation of demands and solidarity action at the Spuiplein in The Hague on Friday 25 August at 12:00!

For eleven years, Jelena has been living in precarious, anti-squat or subletting. To top it all off, her precarious living situation led to her being wrongly accused of welfare fraud by the Municipality of The Hague this summer. All her income has been stopped since June and now she is being evicted because she can no longer pay the rent. Together with BPW The Hague, she calls on the involved aldermen Marielle Vavier and Martijn Balster to take action and rectify this gross injustice!

In 2022, the landlord with whom Jelena has been subletting for 4 years decides to accommodate three Ukrainian refugees in the house. Two of them, a couple in their 70s, initially sleep on the sofa in the living room. But Jelena wakes up almost every night from intense nightmares due to her PTSD. She suggests that the elderly couple sleep in her bed during her waking hours.

However, due to the high number of registrations at the address, the municipality is starting an address investigation into overcrowding. There is a misunderstanding that Jelena has permanently given up her room to the Ukrainian couple.

Result: her benefit will be immediately stopped on June 26, 2023 and the almost € 19,000 she received in assistance during the past year will be reclaimed. Now, two months later, the landlord has canceled her rent. Since the loss of her benefit, she can no longer afford it. August 27 she becomes homeless.

We hold the municipality and the relevant aldermen directly responsible for the situation of imminent homelessness that has arisen, as it is a direct consequence of the withdrawal of Jelena's benefits. We call on them to get started immediately for a sustainable solution!

BPW and Jelena demand:

1. Offer housing security and ensure that Jelena can immediately apply for and receive urgent assistance for a social rental home.
2. Provide financial security by reinstating Jelena's benefit as of June 26, and undoing the $19,000 chargeback.

Come to the solidarity action on August 25 at 12:00! Spuiplein 70, in front of the city hall, 5 to 10 minutes walk from The Hague Central. Speak up and share the article.

BPW HAS A CONFIDENTIAL AND A CONFIDENTIAL CONTACT PERSON

During the ALV of 2022, it was expressed among members that there is a need for a confidential adviser. Since we, as the board of the BPW, find it important that all members feel safe in their collaborations and that there is no undesirable behavior among themselves, we appointed a confidential adviser and confidential contact person in May and June 2023, among other things.

When to contact a confidential (contact) person?
If you have an undesirable situation within the union with regard to another member and want to discuss this in confidence, you can contact a confidential (contact) person. Even though we jointly strive for a place where everyone feels comfortable, undesirable situations can occur, such as (micro) aggression, bullying, discrimination or unwanted humour.

What does a confidential contact person do?
A confidential contact person (VCP) provides initial support and has short-term contact. The VCP enters into a discussion and investigates where the person in question can go with his request for help and which possible steps can be taken.
At the GMM 2023, it was agreed that J. Ottjes will be the confidential contact person of Bond Precaire Woonvorms, to be contacted via confidant@bondprecairewoonvormen.nl.

What does an external confidential advisor do?
If you prefer to have the conversation with an external confidential advisor, the necessary contact information can be requested via the VCP (see above email address).
An external confidential adviser is not affiliated with the BPW and accompanies a victim or accused person (often for a longer period of time). The confidential counselor has followed an accredited course.
