Huurders Charlois is een nieuwe groep, gevestigd in het zuiden van Rotterdam, opgericht door huurders van de woningcorporatie Woonstad. Leden van de groep kampen momenteel met acute financiële problemen als gevolg van COVID-19. Ondanks de crisis blijft Woonstad eisen dat de huurders hun huur betalen. In de Woonstad-regelgeving staat dat de oplossing voor degenen die niet kunnen betalen bestaat uit het vragen van tijdelijk uitstel en/of het aanvragen van overheidssubsidies.

In een open brief die online is gepubliceerd, stelt de groep echter
dat niet iedereen steun kan krijgen door middel van subsidie en dat opschorten leidt tot schuldopbouw door inkomstenderving. Bovendien zorgt de recente huurverhoging voor nog meer onzekerheid.

In de landelijke context zien we dat deze positie niet uniek is. De Kunstenbond en het Platform BK hebben een verklaring gepubliceerd waarin wordt uitgelegd dat het “zonder uitzicht op betaling geen zin heeft om de betaling van de huur uit te stellen”.

BPW Rotterdam (facebook / twitter) ondersteunt dit initiatief als noodzakelijke stap voor het vinden van oplossingen die werken voor huurders. Huurverlaging en huurkwijtschelding zijn echte oplossingen. Op 19 mei 17:00 houd BPW Rotterdam een online woonspreekuur.

Rent postponement is not a solution: tenants in Charlois, Rotterdam organise themselves

Huurders Charlois is a new group based in the south of Rotterdam set up by tenants of the housing corporation Woonstad. Members of the group currently face acute financial difficulties as a result of COVID-19. Despite the crisis, Woonstad continues to demand that the tenants pay their rent. Woonstad regulations state that the solution for those who cannot pay is to ask for temporary postponement and/or apply for government subsidies.

However, in an open letter published online, the group states that not everyone can receive support through subsidy and that postponement leads to debt build-up due to loss of income. Furthermore, the recent rental increase creates even more uncertainty. 

In the national context, we can see that this position is not unique. The Kunstenbond and Platform BK have published a statement which explains that “without a perspective of being paid, there is no point in delaying the payment of rent”.

BPW Rotterdam (facebook / twitter) supports this initiative as a necessary step for finding solutions that work for tenants. Rent reduction and rent cancelation are real solutions. On the 19th of May 17:00 BPW Rotterdam organises an online housing meeting.
